LOL Kevin, I don't know art, but I like it. Anyway my comments are kind of random, I hope you don't take offense.

One thing I thought of looking at this mask is whether you've considered bronze? Yeah, I know it's an expensive process. On the other hand working with plaster isn't expensive and is a great medium for thinking 3D.

I love your photography. It's interesting contemplating the relative worth of drawing vis a vis drawing. It's clear that drawing has some great advantages that really come to light when working with a 3D sculpture.

LOL well it seems to me it would.

I once met Jon Fischer http://www.roomsof.com/channels/art/johnfisher/jon2.shtml
at PingTing's. I was really curious what he looked like from banging on marble for so long. You know what I noticed the most? His feet are really firmly planted on the ground. I guess he's used to fighting the resistance flingling a heavy hammer. Anyway I don't think he sketches much at all. It's the mysterious process of the form being revealed by the piece of marble.

The main thing I want to say is that art is essential. All of us have to compose our lives. I think there are many people your age who are very good at making art, but who don't want to make that a vocation. Don't worry there's plenty of time to see what you decide.

I knew that PingTing values Romare Bearden's art. What I hadn't known until recently was that Bearden worked a whole career as a social worker.

Back to people your age...the difference I see with you is that you seem to get that art makes a difference in the wider community; that it's not simply a matter of the artist process and product.

Art has a life of it's own and the artist as Fisher says of his work, "pulls the figure from the stone" the relationship by others then to the figure isn't entirely his making.

One reason I find your blogging so important is that you are examining this aspect of your art; that is how people engage it.

kaunda,

The mask is actually a fragment of a porcelain sculpture that I used to make a plaster mold for a kiln cast glass piece at the Pittsburgh Glass Center. The piece should be completely fired sometime this week, and I will post it on the blog.

I would love to work in bronze, I recently watched a special on bronze casting. I hope that art school will give me the means to explore that medium.

Thanks for your support, insight, and interesting links. I really love reading your comments. Please continue to view and give feedback.

Kevin
